Jurgen
Klopp's side has announced the defender will be unavailable for selection while
UEFA investigates him for a "possible anti-doping rule violation."
Liverpool has announced
defender Mamadou Sakho won't be considered for selection while being
investigated for a positive drug test.
The
France international is under investigation from UEFA and will not be selected
by the Reds while the matter is being reviewed.
Goal understands the test
took place after Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Manchester United on March 17 at Old
Trafford, as the Reds progressed to the quarterfinals of the Europa League at
their rival's expense.
Liverpool
has not yet confirmed which substance the 26-year-old tested positive for, but
reports in France suggest it was a fat burner.
"Yesterday,
Friday 22nd April 2016, a formal communication was received from UEFA stating
that they are investigating a possible anti-doping rule violation by Mamadou
Sakho," read a club statement.
"The player will respond to UEFA on the matter. The player is currently not subject to any playing suspension. However, the club, in consultation with the player, has decided that while this process is followed the player will not be available for selection for matches.

UEFA
later released its own statement, saying:
"UEFA
would like to confirm the information communicated by Liverpool FC regarding an
adverse finding in a doping test of their player Mamadou Sakho conducted at the
UEFA Europa League match between Manchester United FC and Liverpool FC on 17
March 2016 (1-1).
"The
player and the club have received all the pertinent information and have until
Tuesday to request the analysis of the B sample as well as to provide
explanations for the presence of a prohibited substance in the players' body.
There are no disciplinary proceedings opened at this stage."
Sakho
has made 34 appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season, memorably
scoring the equalizer against Borussia Dortmund as Liverpool won 4-3 at Anfield
in the second leg of their Europa League quarterfinal.
